Answer Engine Optimization
SEO got you ranked. AEO gets you named.
The work of being the name an AI assistant gives.
The Definition
What Answer Engine Optimization is.
Search engines rank pages. Answer engines pick names. You are competing to be one of two or three in a paragraph, not one of ten on a page.
- 1
Someone asks
A question in plain language, not a keyword.
- 2
The engine reads
Your site, your structured data, directories, reviews, and whoever else mentions you.
- 3
It decides who it trusts
Corroboration across sources beats anything you claim about yourself.
- 4
It names two or three
With a reason attached. No list to scroll.

Answer Engine Optimization — AEO — is the practice of building the signals that make an AI assistant confident enough to name a specific business in its answer. It applies to ChatGPT, Claude, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, and any system that responds to a question with a recommendation rather than a list of links.
The distinction from traditional search optimization is not cosmetic. Search engines rank documents: they decide which pages best match a query and order them. Answer engines synthesize: they read across many sources, form a view about who does what, and return a short answer naming a few businesses — often with a sentence explaining why. You are not competing for a position on a page. You are competing to be one of two or three names in a paragraph.
That changes what the work is. Ranking rewards a strong page. Getting named rewards a coherent, verifiable, widely corroborated picture of a business — one assembled from your site, your structured data, the directories and review platforms the engines read, and whatever independent sources mention you. The engine is not evaluating your best page. It is deciding whether it knows enough about you to put your name in front of someone.
Some people call this GEO — Generative Engine Optimization. The terms are used interchangeably and describe the same work. AEO is the more common label, and it is the one we use.
The Research
What the citation data actually shows.
It isn't a top-ten game
Share captured by the leaders (%)In search, the top ten results take roughly two thirds of the clicks. In AI answers, no single domain clears five percent — the other ninety-five spreads across thousands of sources.
Every engine reaches elsewhere
What each one leans on- ChatGPT
Wikipedia · Reddit · editorial sites like Forbes
- Google AI
Platforms like Facebook and Yelp
- Perplexity
Reddit · LinkedIn · G2 for B2B queries
One visibility score across four engines is an average that hides the answer. They have to be tracked separately.
And it moves in weeks
Reddit's share of ChatGPT answers (%)Six weeks. Fifty points. Visibility earned once is visibility you can lose without touching a thing — which is why this is monitored work, not a project.

The Mechanism
How an answer enginedecides who to name.
It has to be able to identify you
Engines assemble you from every source they can read. When those sources disagree, there is no confident version of you to recommend.
It has to understand what you actually do
Schema declares what prose only implies. Without it, the engine infers — and inference is where competitors who declared it clearly get chosen.
It weighs what other people say about you
No engine recommends a business on that business's own claims. Reviews, mentions, and directory presence decide it. Most businesses are thinnest here.
It answers questions, not keywords
People describe a problem, not a search term. The material that gets cited is the material that answers the underlying question.
AEO vs SEO
It doesn't replace SEO.It runs on top of it.
Answer engines read the same crawlable, structured web that good SEO produces. A site search engines struggle to parse is a site answer engines struggle to parse.
The most common misread of AEO is that it makes search engine optimization obsolete. It does not, and the reason is mechanical: answer engines are reading the web, and a great deal of what they read is the same crawlable, structured, well-organized material that good SEO produces. A site that search engines struggle to parse is a site answer engines struggle to parse.
The relationship is closer to foundation and structure. SEO builds the substrate — a site that can be crawled, content that is organized and legible, technical health, authority earned over time. AEO builds on that substrate toward a different outcome: not a ranking position, but a confident recommendation.
Which is why we run both. Google still sends real traffic and real revenue, and the work that keeps you visible there is largely the same work that makes you legible to an answer engine.
The Work
What AEO looks like in practice.
Query universe
The questions your buyers actually ask, run against the engines on a recurring basis. You see which name you and which name a competitor.
Structured data implementation
Schema configured for your business type, services, locations, and catalog. Reviewed as the engines evolve, because what they read is still moving.
Citation and source coverage
Presence built and corrected across the directories, review platforms, and category sources engines actually pull from.
Content built to be cited
Material that answers the question underneath the query, structured so an engine can lift a clear, attributable statement out of it.
Competitor tracking
The businesses currently named for your queries, monitored continuously. You see a competitor appear the week it happens, not a quarter later.
Live visibility reporting
Citation coverage, query-level performance, and competitive position in a dashboard you can open any time. Not a monthly PDF.
